KUALA LUMPUR: MCA vice-president Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai will contest the deputy president’s post in the party election on Dec 21.
He will face Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who is pairing up with deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai for the No. 1 and No. 2 posts.
Lim, who is Selangor MCA chairman, made the announcement at Wisma MCA here yesterday. He was accompanied by over 100 supporters representing various divisions.
Although there is an urgency to rejuvenate the party, Lim said there must be a balance between young and experienced members.
With more than 30 years in the MCA and his experience serving in four ministries, Lim, 57, said he was confident he could help the party pull through difficult times.
He said he knew there would usually be menus circulating around during the party elections. “Do not follow. Pick the best (persons) from the lists,” he urged the central delegates.
Lim hoped the election would be a gentlemen’s fight with no personal attacks.
He said he would help the party to end the faction disputes to create a united MCA after the polls, adding that the new leadership must draw up short, mid and long-term political goals to lead the party out of the mire.
Liow, vice-president Gan Ping Sieu and former president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat are all bidding for the presidency.
Asked if he would team up with any of them, Lim answered: “As a veteran leader, I can work with everyone.”
He had served as the Transport Ministry parliamentary secretary, Deputy Information Minister, Deputy Tourism Minister and Deputy Finance Minister.
