Thieves flee after ATM heist failure

IPOH: Two thieves went away empty-handed after failing to cut open an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) at a bank at Persiaran Greenhill.

Ipoh deputy OCPD Supt Anuar Othman said a bank employee lodged a police report about 8.30am yesterday after finding the machine vandalised.

There were burn marks on the ATM, which was believed to have been caused by an oxy-acetylene torch while two CCTV cameras were sprayed with paint.

However, we managed to retrieve images from the CCTV.

Based on the images, the robbery lasted about 10 minutes.

We have identified the suspects clad in yellow and black jackets although they were wearing masks.

The suspects did not leave behind any tools or equipment and we believe they escaped in a car,” he told reporters when met at the scene of the crime.

Supt Anuar advised banks not to put up posters or announcements on their bank doors or windows, especially at ATM rooms.

Passers-by might not be able to see what is going on in the rooms,” he added.
