GEORGE TOWN: A bright yellow effigy of Tai Su Yeah (King of Hades) was burnt in Hye Keat Estate, Air Itam, here in a ritual to send the deity back to the underworld.
The 3m-tall effigy was made from thousands of folded ong seng jee (joss paper with imprinted sutras) by members of the Sian Chye Tong Temple youth section committee.
Its chairman Loh Choon Teik said Tai Su Yeah, known as Mi Lan Da Su by Buddhists, was believed to be one of Guan Yin’s (Goddess of Mercy) transformation to look after spirits that were set free to roam during the seventh lunar month.
The temple committee members and some 200 devotees also burnt a huge yellow paper ship known as Say Hong Chun during the same ritual on Saturday to send some of the spirits to “Buddha Pure Land”.
“It was burnt together with paper tablets which had the names of the deceased written on them,” Loh added.
