PETALING JAYA: More than 8,000 people, mostly gangsters, have been detained by police following the launch of the Ops Cantas Khas nationwide crackdown on crime a month ago.
Showing no signs of letting up, the operation has also seen police seizing 283 weapons, including 23 guns and 12 homemade air rifles since Aug 17.
Bukit Aman anti-vice, gambling and secret societies’ division head Senior Asst Comm Datuk Jalil Hassan said the majority of the 8,449 detainees were Malays (3,620), followed by Indians (2,425), Chinese (1,052) and others (1,352).
“The police are colour blind in upholding justice. There is no discrimination of a particular race as alleged by certain parties,” he said when contacted yesterday.
He said police inspected 202,839 people during the operation, mostly conducted between midnight and 5pm.
“We also screened 124,095 vehicles. The operation is still ongoing and we will not stop until we are certain that serious crimes have reduced drastically. We also recovered 354 vehicles, including 174 cars and 150 motorcycles,” he said.
He added that among the weapons seized were 23 guns, 12 homemade air rifles, 1,232 bullets, 25 swords, 89 knives, 83 machetes, 16 steel rods and a hand grenade.
On a possible strike back from the gangsters following the crackdown and revelation of the gang names and logos, SAC Jalil said police would not be deterred and would remain vigilant as they still have some work to do.
In Shah Alam, Selangor police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said statistics indicated a reduction in crime rate since Ops Cantas Khas was launched.
“Although the percentage is low, this translates to at least a few hundred arrests because of the volume of the population,” he told reporters at the state contingent headquarters.
He said that in Selangor alone, 106 suspected gang members were arrested between Sept 5 and Sept 16.
