KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel says that he is confident of retaining the president's post come Sept 1 party presidential election.
He said that there was no powerful challenger to the president's post.
"The president and deputy president posts will remain unopposed," he said after the Asian Mining and Energy Investment forum 2013 Tuesday.
Palanivel said that his deputy Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam would not be contesting against him for the president's post, quelling all speculations that the latter would challenge him for the post.
He said that only the vice-president and central working committee posts would be contestedMeanwhile a reliable official said the consensus was reached after the president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam and vice presidents Datuk M. Saravanan and Datuk S.K. Devamany had discussions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak late Sunday.
“The Prime Minister advised the four that it would be better to avoid a contest to avoid a split and concentrate on strengthening the party.
“The four MIC leaders had a separate meeting in a hotel and decided to heed the Prime Minister’s advice. They agreed to the no contest for the president’s post for the sake of unity,” the official said.
He said Dr. Subramaniam had also spoken on the agreementduring a close door dinner with his supporters in Putrajaya late Monday.
An official announcement is expected to be made on Thursday.
The compromise will pave the way for Palanivel who took over the presidency in Dec 2010, to be elected as the president on Sept 1 if there are no other leaders contesting.
There had been calls from the ground for a no contest as the party can ill afford to lose one of them in the event of a contest.
Any leader intending to contest for the president’s post will have to obtain 50 nominations, with each nomination getting the support of six branch chairmen, with over 4,000 branch chairmen eligible to vote.
