Sungai Petani: Three women and a girl died while a teenage boy was injured after the car they were in collided with a lorry at Jalan Sidam Kiri-Padang Serai, near here.
The deceased were identified as driver Tan Sou Kim, 50, Tan Siew Chin @Daod Serni, 45, Ong Siew Yan, age unknown, while the young girl was identified as Tan Jit May, aged 11.
The injured male teenager was identified as Hou Guan Ting, 18.
They were all members of the same family.
It is learnt that the car driven by Sou Kim skidded before it entered the opposite lane and crashed head on with the lorry coming from the opposite direction.
Kuala Muda traffic chief Deputy Supt Ahmad Kamil Ahmad said the car driver and the back passengers were thrown out due to the impact.
The victims were believed to be travelling from Padang Serai to here when the accident occurred at 5.40pm yesterday.
“The four died at the scene due to multiple injuries.
“The bodies were later sent to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for a post-mortem.
“The injured teenager was also rushed to the same hospital for treatment,” he said.
Supt Ahmad Kamil added that the 40-year-old lorry driver has been released on bail after his statement was recorded.
Meanwhile an eye-witness M. Arumugam, 45, said he saw Guan Ting trapped in the front passenger seat and crying in pain.
“Several people and I helped pull him out of the wrecked car,” he said.
He added that the other victims were already dead when he arrived.
